I was watching the episode "Time Squared" again and I realized in many scenes you were just there, with no lines. Of course there was one scene that reminded me of how your character was in Encounter at Farpoint. Don't get me wrong, I liked Troi from the start, I even fell in love with the Imzadi idea with that episode too ("Do you remember what I taught you Imzadi? Can you still sense my thoughts?" I think there was a resounding yes, as well as shock to see you, in Will's eyes). That was cool. :)
Even so, I've seen Farpoint and Time Squared more than once and thought, "I'm so glad they had her stop crying when she felt intense pain and alike, as well as, "If you should be hurt..." Yeah, I know he's your Imzadi, but your in Starfleet, just as "weird is the name of the game" (Janeway) sadly death is too, just as Dr. Crusher could tell anyone, but you don't make commander, as Deanna learns later, without having to make choices you don't want to make. I've heard you weren't too keen on Encounter, but your character was still the bomb, even if Encounter or the one scene in TIme Squared wasn't the best of Deanna. They (director, who ever) brought back the empath internalizing the emotion for that one scene in Time Squared a little too much, which I'm glad they stopped doing that so much. I digress from my original question though.
Anyway, back to Time Squared and that one scene aside with the second Picard, I was wondering if you felt with no or almost no lines in many scenes that you were just there and if you wondered why you were there (except for pay, of course), except to follow the captain around and be present in a meeting? Although acting is more than just lines, of course, so maybe you didn't feel as though you were just there in the scene, because you did have some facial acting happening too. When I write a story, fanfic, fiction, etc, I try to make sure everyone in the scene has a line or more and isn't just standing there or sitting there, otherwise I have to ask myself, why I put them there. What is their purpose in that scene and what are they doing, their movements, etc. Thus, when I was watching Time Squared, when I saw you sitting at the table during the meeting, standing there in Sickbay with the the two captains, following your captain around, etc., except for that scene that brought back memories of Farpoint, I thought to myself, "Why didn't they give Troi something to say in that scene, instead just dropping her in and saying nothing?" I think about the most you said in Sickbay was something about getting closer to the second captain's time... That was all I can remember. Anyway, I think they should have given you more lines. Great facial acting, by the way. :)
This is one of many scenes in that episode which I referred to above, which you were just there and a blind person wouldn't have known you existed in the scene. I think the writers should have tried to give you at least one line or if the line was cut, call me bias in favour of Deanna, it shouldn't have been. (Sorry, Val, there's no captions and couldn't find a meeting with captions. :( ) Anyway, I was wondering how you felt with almost nothing or nothing to say and just being there looking great on camera, if I may say.
You have to remember the time in which we were filming. It's very different for women in show business now. We were not equal back then. I think the thinking went something like this....... we're paying her, she should be there.

Is what I heard her say many times.... Fortunately it got better once the writers figured out a way to deal with the special abilities.
