Happy International Womens Day! I definitely think Deanna Troi was (is?) one of the most underrated Trek characters of all time. I just read an article that someone put out where they said the following and it pissed me off beyond reason. Just 😤
“Suddenly you’ve got a tea sipping Captain and school children romping about the family friendly Enterprise! And because feelings are “complicated” we really need a psychiatrist to deal with all of our playtime interactions on the holodeck. And thus poor Marina Sirtis landed the ultimate wimpy role of being touchy-feely about the finer points of romping around the universe in your leotards. And making matters worse it was like the writers never quite knew what to do with Deanna Troi: In fact just to make her character more hippy-like it was deemed that she came from a planet where everyone is married at clothing optional ceremonies, and in a later film upon discovering the fountain of youth she needs to confide loudly about her rejuvenated cleavage to Dr. Beverly Crusher. This isn’t bad for a typical soap opera, but it started to make you wanted to root for the Borg after a while... I blame Deanna Troi for allowing Riker to “let go” and embrace his inner slacker — the devastating result was non-regulation facial hair and too many visits to the food replicator for midnight snacks…So at the end of the day Troi seems to sum up everything that is wrong about Star Trek.“
Like what?! Did this person even watch the show? Like seriously sit down and give it a proper watch? Deanna Troi is such a kind-hearted character, but she is strong as all hell. Troi stands up for what she believes in, even if others hate her for it. I agree that her costume choices weren’t the best, but to reduce her to nothing more than an annoying pretty object to look at? Do they really think Troi would have put up with that kind of misogyny? If they do, I have a bridge I’d like to sell them.
I’m sorry, but it irks me when people hate on Troi and hate on those of us who are emotionally sensitive. There is nothing wrong with showing your emotions, positive and negative. In fact, it was Deanna Troi who said, ”To admit that you’re afraid gives you strength”. It’s hard as hell to lay out your raw emotions for all to see and that’s what makes Troi so brave. Not only did she do this, but she helped others to do the same.
Also, her character helped to destigmatize mental illness and the need for therapy. In fact, talking about mental illness and therapy was practically unheard of before her. She normalized it and showed us that you aren’t weak if you need help. That mental illness is just as valid as physical illness. So, the person who wrote the above can go shove it, in my not so humble opinion. Sorry for the long post, but I just felt that this needed to be said.
It was under a pseudonym (how brave, right?), and that wasn’t even the whole article. Just some excerpts. I didn’t want to share the whole thing or link it here because the point of my comment was to show that Troi is an inspiration to girls and women despite what others may say, not give this idiot more attention than they deserve (as Astrid mentioned).
I never give credence to misogyny or the rants of an incel who secretly pines over the character when not abusing the likeness with pencil & paper. Of course we see life through a few billion different lenses, but that one was ridiculous. Not everything is worth the fight because there is no changing of the mind—the person who wrote it is a bitter idiot and we know it. So does Marina, Jonathan Frakes, and every show runner who has ever been responsible for the beautiful development of their characters. To answer such imbecile would be fueling their desire for attention. Negative attention is attention too.
Women in Germany still don‘t earn as much money as men do for the same kind of work. In the grand overall total they earn 39% less. That is due to them working more part time jobs. Also they earn 18% less per hour than men because they are also more likely to work in the less paid for jobs. And then there‘s the gender hours gap. Having a child very often makes women reduce their time at work while men increase their working hours. And last but not least men earn 24,36 Euro per hour while women average 20,05 Euro. Hence equal pay day in Germany was yesterday, mach 7th. Up until today women in Germany basically worked for free.

How can this still be today? Makes me sick to think about it. Women should be supported when they raise children, not kicked in the but.
Thanks
