When Ilana (DeVitto) travels to Santorini with her Greek boyfriend Mike (Tsimitselis) for his sister Alex's (Katerina Konstas) wedding, she's thrilled to be asked to be her American Maid of Honor. Mike surprises Ilana by proposing, leaving Ilana gets caught in the whirlwind created by his well-meaning and overly enthusiastic mother Athena (Sirtis).
That’s great. Unfortunately, oftentimes, non Greeks play iconic Greek characters. For instanc, Netflix is doing a documentary on Cleopatra who was born in Greece (before moving to and ruling Egypt) and comes from a long lineage of Greeks. The actress playing her in the documentary isn’t even a little bit Greek and certainly doesn’t look Greek. I would hope that people would want a documentary to be as historically accurate as possible. Netflix’s casting choice is basically a slap in the face to all Greeks, people of Greek descent and Greek history/culture as a whole. And this isn’t anything new either. That’s why I’m so excited for Marina for getting this role. These producers and directors did it right.
